Analyst, DC Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE)

I worked for DC OSSE from August 2013 to July 2015. I held two different roles (and can’t post images because I worked with sensitive student data).

Education Research Analyst – Early Childhood Data

From September 2014 to June 2015, I focused on early childhood data (newborns to four year olds). Providers submit data to OSSE in order to get funding for children whose families qualify for subsidies.

Data collection systems were outdated and frustrating. We looked for areas that created the most potential for error and recommended ways to revitalize them by:

  • Visiting providers onsite and conducting interviews
  • Visiting other stakeholders and conducting interviews
  • Creating mockups
  • Creating a beta version of our solution for tests with providers

Management Analyst – PK3-12 Data, Charter School Focus

From August 2013 to September 2014, I worked with employees in charter schools to launch the Automated Data Transfer project.

The ADT project allowed schools to send their rosters to OSSE by installing a .NET client and setting a scheduled job to run on a weekly basis. Set, and forget. In prior years, schools sent rosters via Excel spreadsheets. This system is how the District awards funding, and spreadsheets lead to lots of errors – and months worth of appeals.

I ran a three school pilot and helped schools set up the tool to transfer data to get their funding quickly and correctly. I planned an expansion of the pilot across the other 60+ charter schools in DC, and worked with a team to make that plan a reality.
